Summer Sun Safety
With the summer sun beating down, it’s important to remember that children are more susceptible to heat injuries because they absorb more heat than adults and cannot dissipate that heat through sweat as quickly. To help prevent heat-related injuries, make sure your children drink plenty of water and fluids and take breaks in the shade often. Drinks with electrolytes such as Gatorade® brand or other sports drinks can be beneficial in addition to water. Make sure your children are always protected with a sunscreen containing an SPF of 45 or higher and encourage them to wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Taking just a few moments to apply (and reapply!) sunscreen and fill (and refill!) a water bottle could help keep your children healthy and happy so they can continue having fun in the summer sun!

Car Seat Safety Tips
Since we’re so proud of our new European Maxi-Cosi® car seats we thought it would be a great time to review car seat safety tips. Here at Safety 1st your child comes first and the welfare of your children is our top priority, so take a quick moment to review the following important tips.
- Always use a car seat. Start with your newborn’s first ride home from the hospital.
- The back seat is the best place for all children to ride.
- Set a good example - always wear your seat belt. Help your child form a lifelong habit of buckling up.
- Purchasing decisions should not be based on price alone. All car seats available for purchase in the United States must meet strict safety standards established and maintained by the federal government.
- When you find a car seat you like, try it out. Put your child in it and adjust the harnesses and buckles. Make sure it fits properly and securely in your car. Keep in mind that pictures or displays of car seats in stores may not show them being used the right way.
- Read your vehicle owner's manual and the installation instructions that come with your car seat to learn how to correctly install it. Look for local car seat checks, or check with your local fire and police stations to have your seats installed or checked by certified technicians.
- Remember that each car and car seat is different. Read and keep the instructions that come with the car seat, and follow the manufacturer's instructions at all times.
- Never place a child in a rear-facing car seat in the front seat of a vehicle, especially one with an active air bag.
- Babies under age 1 should always ride in a rear-facing car seat.
- Toddlers over age 1 and weighing 20 to 40 pounds can ride in a forward-facing car seat, only in the back seat. It is advisable to keep toddlers in a rear-facing position up until they reach the maximum weight and height allowed by the car seat.
- Children weighing 40 to 80 pounds and under 4’9” tall (typically around 4 years old) should be secured in a belt-positioning booster seat.

Spotlight on Haley, Cade, and Alana!
This month we chatted with Safety 1st Design Director, Andrew Marsden, about what it’s like raising his three children: Haley, a 5-year old girl, Cade, a 2-year old boy, and his newest addition, Alana who was just born in May. Andrew and his wife Laura have their hands full with Haley who is already taking charge of her younger brother by soothing him when he’s crying and changing his diaper. If they didn’t have gates in the kitchen doorway, Andrew is convinced Haley would be whipping up a batch of pancakes for everyone! She’s also learning how to surf and loves going boating and fishing with her father. For Haley’s birthday this year she asked to catch a big tuna, which makes Dad very proud! Meanwhile Cade is our next certified car seat technician in training. He loves to practice installing (and uninstalling) his car seat. He enjoys building sand castles, fishing, boogie boarding, and is fascinated by anything that has a motor. Newborn Alana is not quite two months old yet and is already a handful as you might expect. She finally started sleeping for a few hours at a time which gives Mom a much needed break. Andrew is happy to note that she’s the calmest and quietest of the three so far (yeah, give her some time Andrew). We wish both Andrew and Laura good luck with their adorable trio and hope they catch lots of fish this summer!
