Celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd!
April 22nd is Earth Day – our chance to celebrate and appreciate the Earth’s environment. And, with increasing energy costs, you can save money while doing your part to help protect it. Turn off or unplug lights and electronic devices when they’re not being used. Buy and use energy-efficient appliances when possible. Plan a day each week when you and your family can take a walk together instead of driving the car. Recycle at home and at work as well.
Top 10 Tips for Going Green
Great Solutions for the Rainy Day Doldrums
We all know that April showers bring May flowers, but sometimes it’s hard to see the silver lining when you’re trying to think of activities to keep your little ones entertained on those rainy days. It can be especially challenging when older children are stuck inside and you need to find fun things to do for children of different ages. Here are some great ideas that will keep them busy, and some safety tips that will ensure the day is enjoyable.
Create a Treasure Hunt: Use some common household objects that wouldn’t normally be found in the playroom and create a treasure hunt. (Examples are stuffed animals from the bedroom, plastic kitchen utensils and the TV remote!) Draw pictures of the items and write out the names of each so little children can participate and big children can work on their spelling!
Safety Tip: Keep children away from hot baseboard heaters and space heaters that can present burning hazards.
Make Your Own Jigsaw Puzzles: Have pictures on the computer from those special moments like family vacations, parties or holiday celebrations? Print 2 copies, glue one to a sheet of heavier construction paper (available at office stores or most drugstores and supermarkets), then cut into pieces. Save the other copy as a reference and have your children recreate the picture.
Safety Tip: For smaller children, make sure you cut your puzzle into larger pieces to avoid swallowing or choking hazards.
Put on a Magic Show, Concert or Play: Let your children borrow some of mom and dad’s old clothes for costumes. Use blankets for capes and wooden spoons for magician’s wands to create a show for the entire family. Set up a stage by attaching a sheet across an extra large door opening.
Safety Tip: Be mindful of children climbing to reach tall dresser drawers and armoires to get clothing and other items. Heavy furniture can easily topple over onto them and should always be secured to the wall with furniture straps.
Create a Special Meal or Desert: Making a cake or a pan of brownies is a great activity for a rainy day. Or, your children can help with dinner by using easy recipes like Egg Muffin Pizzas, Taco Salads or a hearty Vegetable Stew.
Safety Tip: Keep children away from stovetops and install oven guards and stove knob covers. Make sure the little ones don’t handle sharp knives, sharp-edged cans, or breakable objects such as dishware or coffee pots. Be mindful of choking hazards in the refrigerator and consider installing a refrigerator lock.
Give into Your Inner Child: Remember how much fun you had splashing through puddles when you were young? Well, nothing says that growing up means you can’t indulge yourself, too. With temperatures getting warmer, a walk in the rain with your children may be just the solution when you can’t stay cooped up inside a moment longer.
Safety Tip: Make sure your children’s clothing gives adequate protection from the wet weather. Raincoats and umbrellas are a must. It’s especially important to have warm, waterproof boots or shoes. Dress your little ones in layers if the weather is a little chilly.Top

Step into Spring with New Products!Safety 1st Curve Gate
Getting to the top of the stairs with a basket full of laundry is tough enough, but try getting there and then having to open a gate without dropping the basket! This balancing act can be frustrating (and dangerous) so that’s why we designed the Safety 1st Curve Gate. It creates a landing space at the top of the stairs to reduce the chance of stumbling when you get to the top! It can also be used in between rooms to create an enhanced view so you’re little one can still see you even if you’re in the other room. Or vice versa, you can sneak a quick peek on your little one while you’re in the next room. It’s hardware mounted and easily swings open with one hand. It also features our SecureTech™ indicator so you can easily tell if the gate is securely locked!
Safety 1st Secure Top Bed Rail
Keeping your toddler in bed can be a challenge, that’s why we developed the Safety 1st Secure Top Bed Rail. Unlike most bed rails, it attaches to the top of the mattress and offers 15 inches of total protection. It features our SofTech™ foam on the bottom rail so it cushions your little one when he’s tossing and turning. Our SecureTech™ indicator lets you know that the bed rail is locked in the proper position, and it unlocks and folds down for easy bed making! What could be more convenient?

Spotlight on Brendan!
This month, we chatted with Safety 1st Director of Marketing, Kristin McGillicuddy, about her 7-year old son, Brendan who just graduated into 1st grade at elementary school. Brendan started reading for the first time and now loves to bring home books from the school library and read them out loud. Kristin says it felt like he learned to read overnight; “one day he couldn’t read, and the next day he was reading everything!” Brendan even writes his own stories in make-shift books made of stapled pages—did we mention he illustrates them too?
