However, like with many other things, watching television in moderation is not likely to be harmful and may actually be a helpful learning tool. Many parents set television controls to allow children only to view certain channels, set limits to viewing time, and use television show DVDs to avoid commercials. Many programs created for young children are visually stimulating, help teach numbers and letters, and contain baby appropriate material. As tempting as it may be to place your little one in front of the TV while you get some chores done, make up for it by providing alternatives to television as often as possible. Playing with toys, going for a walk, talking, listening to music and reading are all things to do to keep kids away from the screen and initiate a stronger parent-child bond at the same time. Until they start crawling, most babies stay fairly clean and fully bathing them is necessary only a few times per week. Until your baby’s umbilical cord stump fully dries and falls off, sponge baths are recommended to avoid getting the area wet. Baby’s hands and face should be washed frequently and genitals should be thoroughly wiped during every diaper change. Since baby’s skin is likely to get dry, lathering her in lotion is key to lock in moisture, particularly after bathing when baby’s skin is still moist. Drinking water also helps to restore moisture in the skin. Though your baby’s teeth are still lingering beneath the gums, practicing good dental care is important in maintaining overall hygiene. You can wipe your baby’s gums with a soft, wet washcloth and then transition into using a gum stimulator or a small bristled baby toothbrush as teeth start to poke through. Getting your little one used to having her teeth cleaned will also make the transition into tooth brushing less daunting. Once teeth begin to surface, it is also important to avoid allowing your baby to fall asleep with a bottle in her mouth. Formula contains sugar which breaks down inside the mouth and can cause cavities. You can try the new Safety 1st Oral Care Set to aid the transition from infant to toddler oral care. Maintaining your little one’s hygiene is important to her overall health, particularly during infancy. Ask your doctor if any concerning conditions arise, but remember that most infants aren’t born looking ready for their diaper commercial debut! “People ask all the time if I’m having a boy or a girl,” she said. “I want to be surprised. There are so few surprises in life and I think this moment should be one of them.” Laura says that she doesn’t have an inkling of what the baby will be. “I haven’t had any dreams and none of the old wives tales ring true to me, so I guess I will be surprised.” What’s the best part of pregnancy and waiting for baby? “Feeling the baby kicking,” she said. “I get to eat popsicles and milkshakes at any hour of the day without feeling guilty!” Laura knows the product line well, so you’d think it would be easy to pick out stuff for the nursery. “There are so many choices—in so many fashion styles—and not knowing if it will be a boy or a girl makes it that much harder.” We wish Laura luck during this most exciting milestone in life! With autumn in full gear and leaves turning beautiful colors, fall celebrations are everywhere. This month there is pumpkin picking galore, leaf piles in most yards, and celebrations of the season’s harvests. You may be taking your little one to the pumpkin patch, going to an orchard to pick apples, or preparing Halloween decorations for the older kids in your neighborhood. But for many of us, October is the last month of outdoor play before the weather changes. Use this chance to spend as much time outdoors as possible, but don’t forget to bundle up your baby as the weather cools. Find a local farmer’s market and treat yourself to some of the season’s freshest vegetables. Or remember your childhood by playing in the leaves with your little one. This season is full of surprises, so keep an eye open for exciting opportunities that may come your way.
Halloween is just around the corner so don’t forget to send a Safety 1st Halloween e-Card to your friends and family! You can upload a photo of your little ghoul or goblin and share it with everyone! On behalf of Safety 1st, we wish you all a safe and spooky Halloween.
For years, researchers have been studying the effects that television has on children. Watching television has been linked with an increase in child obesity, ADD, and numerous other conditions. Though most of the research pertains to older children, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children over 2 should watch no more than 1 to 2 hours a day of “quality programming” and children below 2 are recommended not to watch television at all. This is primarily because the first 2 years of a child’s life are critical for brain development; at this time a child undergoes emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development.
After a long journey through the womb, baby’s health is delicate and should be meticulously cared for. Babies are prone to conditions including soft spots on their heads, dry skin and cradle cap, baby acne, yellowish skin tone, and sharp nails. Although most of these conditions are normal and disappear over time, maintaining your baby’s hygiene is very important.
